they call it a small town
though it's secrets seem never ending, unfolding before me
discovering family and friends and stories
of a time long before there was me
I've claimed a few corners,
memorizing the route like a young girl who's to meet her lover secretly
and sometimes I slink off to find a moment or three
that belong just to me
and none of it's like I pictured really
though none of it is daunting, or unsavory.
It just takes a while to reconcile
what this place really is and what I want it to be
the compromise is pleasing to me.
I know I'm right where I need to be.
